Comptroller's Office Opens Summary Proceeding Against Former Senator “Chaqueñito” Vera for Omission of Sworn Declaration

The General Comptroller's Office of the Republic (CGR) of Paraguay has initiated an administrative proceeding against former senator Javier “Chaqueñito” Vera for failing to submit his sworn declaration of assets and income after leaving office. The fine may reach 100% of the salary he received.

The General Comptroller's Office of the Republic (CGR) of Paraguay has opened an administrative summary proceeding against former senator Javier “Chaqueñito” Vera for failing to submit his sworn declaration of assets and income within the legal deadline after the end of his term.

Under current legislation, every public official has 15 business days after leaving office to submit the document. Vera, who lost his position by a unanimous Senate decision amid allegations of influence peddling, did not meet the deadline.

The director of Sworn Declarations of the CGR, Armindo Torres, explained that economic sanctions are currently proportional to the former official's salary, ranging from 20% to 100% of the remuneration, depending on the length of the delay. Torres also highlighted that, even without the declaration, the CGR can conduct asset examinations and monitor the evolution of the former senator's assets.

The CGR stated that other former senators who recently left their positions must also submit their sworn declarations soon, as required by law.
