Paraguay's Public Ministry formalized on Monday (18) the request for a 6-year prison sentence for former sports executive Ramón González Daher, accused of perjury. The request was made by prosecutor Andrea Vera during the closing arguments of the oral and public trial, before judges Fabián Weisensee, Laura Ocampo, and Cândida Fleitas.
According to the prosecution, González Daher deliberately lied under oath in May 2021, when testifying as a witness in a defamation complaint filed by Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez against former executive José Medina Sagalés. On that occasion, the defendant told judge María Fernanda García de Zúñiga that he had voluntarily resigned from the vice presidency of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF) to avoid litigation, claiming to be a victim of persecution.
However, official documents sent by the APF and Conmebol contradict this version. The evidence showed that González Daher did not resign on his own initiative, but was removed after failing a fitness and integrity exam required by international football standards. The prosecutor detailed that the former executive invented a supposed complaint against him at FIFA that never existed — the disciplinary process was only open in a Conmebol subcommittee.
Furthermore, the prosecution found that González Daher lied when stating he had never been notified about the investigations by the regional body. The documentary evidence presented at trial confirmed that he received the notifications on time and that his own defense even filed appeals against them.
The court set a recess and scheduled the continuation of the trial for May 25, with closing arguments. González Daher follows the hearings by videoconference from prison, where he is already serving a main sentence of 15 years for usury, money laundering, and false denunciation, in addition to three other sentences between 2023 and 2025 for extortion and reduction. If he receives this new sentence, the penalties will be served concurrently.
