Frente Guasú reiterates that voting machines are a direct threat to the popular will

Frente Guasú, the left-wing coalition led by former President Fernando Lugo, has again stated that electronic voting machines represent a direct threat to the popular will and democracy in Paraguay. The party criticizes the Electoral Justice for allegedly preventing independent audits and demands transparency in the electoral process.

Former Senator Sixto Pereira, leader of Frente Guasú, reiterated that for the left-wing coalition, the voting machines do not guarantee transparency, participation, and democracy. In a public statement, Pereira recalled that the party had already warned about the problem in February, when the Electoral Justice (TSJE) allegedly prevented a real technical audit by experts appointed by the opposition.

According to Pereira, it is the duty of political and social leaders to ensure respect for and guarantee the transparency of the electoral process. He stated that the technicians sent by the opposition to the TSJE reported that only a formal verification was allowed, without full access to the systems.

In a statement released in February, Frente Guasú classified the voting machines as a direct threat to the popular will and democracy, pointing to a lack of transparency, control, and independent audit. The party argued that the system puts the legitimacy of the results and citizens' trust at serious risk.

The coalition denounced that the TSJE has systematically prevented a complete audit and effective external control over the operation of the machines, blocking any possibility of verifying the integrity of the electoral process. “Democracy is sustained solely by the trust of the people. Without audit or independent oversight, the electoral process becomes flawed and the popular will is violated in an unacceptable manner,” the statement said.

Frente Guasú demanded that the TSJE and electoral authorities urgently review the use of these technologies and establish independent verification mechanisms at all stages of the process. “We warn all political forces and citizens to remain vigilant against this threat that puts Paraguayan democracy at risk. This is a firm and forceful call to defend the popular will and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections,” the party concluded.
