Peña and Baruja Deliver Homes in Villa Hayes, Highlight Indigenous Housing

President Santiago Peña and Housing Minister Juan Carlos Baruja delivered 604 homes in Villa Hayes, with a focus on indigenous communities. Baruja touted the government's housing record amid speculation about his political future.

President Santiago Peña and Housing Minister Juan Carlos Baruja participated in a housing delivery event in Villa Hayes, the political stronghold of Senate President Basilio “Bachi” Núñez, on Wednesday. According to Ultima Hora, Baruja highlighted the number of homes provided by the Ministry of Urban Planning, Housing and Habitat (MUVH) amid rumors that he may be chosen as the running mate for Pedro Alliana in the 2028 official ticket.

Baruja stated that 604 families from 12 housing projects in the departments of Presidente Hayes and Boquerón received homes. “These are 604 families that from today will have decent housing. They correspond to 12 social housing projects for low-income families and indigenous communities in Presidente Hayes and Boquerón,” he said, as reported by Ultima Hora. He also announced that the first disbursements for non-resident Paraguayans living in Spain would occur next week, following his recent trip there.

More than 100 homes were financed through cooperation with Taiwan, with additional funding from the Itaipú Technological Park and the National Social Housing Fund. Baruja noted that a total of 45,000 homes have been managed during Peña’s term, with nearly 32,000 completed. He emphasized that the government’s performance should be measured against its own past, not other administrations.

President Peña underscored that most homes delivered in the Chaco region benefit indigenous families. “We are paying one of the many debts we have with our indigenous peoples, because we have already delivered several homes with priority for indigenous peoples. Seven out of every ten homes built in the Chaco are for indigenous families,” he said, according to Ultima Hora. Peña added that his government will not rest until all Paraguayans have a dignified life, and mentioned significant plans for Villa Hayes.
