IPS identifies a thousand medications purchased without justification and announces cleanup of the formulary

The president of the Social Insurance Institute (IPS), Isaías Fretes, presented this Monday (18) the results of the formulary review, identifying about a thousand products acquired unnecessarily, which expire unused. The measure aims to clean up the Health Fund's finances and redirect resources to effective purchases. President Santiago Peña reiterated support for Fretes until 2028, highlighting spending efficiency and combating evasion as priorities.

The president of the Social Insurance Institute (IPS), Isaías Fretes, presented this Monday (18) the results of the review of the formulary of medications, supplies, and devices. In a press conference at the Central Headquarters, Fretes confirmed that approximately a thousand items are purchased without justification, expiring before being used. The removal of these products from the list should clean up the Health Fund's finances and allow resources to be allocated to purchases of real need.

Last week, Fretes had already anticipated the update of the formulary, signaling that many items were being purchased unnecessarily. Since the beginning of his administration, the sessions of the IPS Board of Directors have been broadcast live on YouTube, in an effort toward transparency.

President Santiago Peña, questioned on Saturday about the IPS financial deficit, reiterated his support for Fretes and stated that alternatives to increase revenue include reducing evasion and focusing on spending efficiency. Peña announced that he will keep Fretes in office until August 15, 2028, with the goal of promoting a significant transformation in social security.
