Defense of Lawyer Accused of Spying on Ex-Partner Criticizes Prosecutor's Performance

Lawyer Solange Guerreño, representing the attorney accused of installing GPS and cameras in his ex-partner's vehicle and home, denies the allegations and questions the impartiality of prosecutor Irma Llano from the Paraguayan Public Ministry.

The defense of the lawyer who will stand trial accused of installing a GPS tracking device in his ex-partner's car and hidden cameras in the home where they lived together has denied the allegations and criticized the performance of the prosecutor in charge of the case.

In statements to a local radio station on Tuesday, November 19, lawyer Solange Guerreño stated that prosecutor Irma Llano did not respect her client's presumption of innocence and showed bias in favor of the alleged victim, who is also a Public Ministry employee.

“The most serious thing about all this is not just the media exposure of a banker who has not yet been tried, but rather the irresponsibility and lack of objectivity of prosecutor Irma Llano,” Guerreño declared. “What really concerns me is that she does not have the constitutional duty to act with objectivity, institutional prudence, and she appears publicly installing a unilateral narrative,” she added.

The lawyer alleged that her client installed the cameras in the residence he shared with his ex-partner for security reasons, not to spy on her. According to Guerreño, the complaint was filed after the lawyer left the home to start a new life with another person.

“After so many months of fighting and desired separation, he decides to start over. When the lady found out, she went to him, attacked, physically assaulted the new partner, and, not satisfied, took the car, hit and collided five times against my client's vehicle,” the defender detailed.

Prosecutor Irma Llano had reported that the accused was charged with crimes of unauthorized access to computer systems, violation of the right to communication and image, and child pornography. According to the accusation, he placed a GPS in his ex-partner's car and installed cameras pointed directly at the bed of the room they shared during their 12-year marriage.

The identities of those involved were not disclosed, in accordance with Article 9 of Law 5777 on Comprehensive Protection of Women against All Forms of Violence, which prohibits the reproduction or public dissemination of information without the victim's authorization.
