Camilo Pérez meeting with cooperative leaders stirs controversy over political neutrality

Colorado Party pre-candidate for mayor of Asunción, Camilo Pérez, meets with cooperative leaders at Fecomulp headquarters amid questions about breaching the Cooperative Law, which requires political neutrality.

Asunción mayoral pre-candidate for the Honor Colorado movement, Camilo Pérez, is attending a meeting with cooperative leaders this Tuesday at the headquarters of the Federation of Multiactive Cooperatives of Paraguay (Fecomulp), located on Félix Bogado Street near Picada Diarte. The gathering, set for 8 p.m., takes place despite Law No. 438/94, which regulates the sector, stipulating that cooperatives must observe "neutrality in matters of party and movement politics, religion, race, and nationality."

The invitation, shared on social media, shows cooperative leader and Fecomulp deputy treasurer Jorge Cruz Roa, who also represents Cooperativa Universitaria Ltda., as the event host. The activity comes less than three weeks before the municipal primaries scheduled for June 7.

Fecomulp president Alcibíades Quiñónez Ayala, representing Cooperativa San Lorenzo Ltda., is a former city councilor who completed the term of ousted San Lorenzo mayor Albino Ferrer; both are members of the National Republican Association (ANR) and the Honor Colorado movement.

The meeting reignites debate over the limits of political activity by cooperative entities, which by law must remain nonpartisan. So far, there has been no official statement from Fecomulp or oversight bodies on the matter.
