Residents of Yabebyry, in the department of Misiones, blocked the road linking San Ignacio and Yabebyry on May 16, 2026, to demand urgent repairs to the severely deteriorated route. The protesters highlighted that deep potholes along much of the stretch create constant hazards for drivers and motorcyclists, especially at night when visibility is low and the holes are hard to see.
The road connects the towns of Ayola, Corateí, Yabebyry, and Panchito López with San Ignacio, as well as the community of Laureles in Ñeembucú. It serves a productive agricultural area with significant rice producers and farmworkers who travel daily to San Ignacio to sell their goods.
“We held the protest as a pressure measure to demand repairs to our road, a demand we have made for a long time, and it represents a danger for those who travel here,” said protester Manuel Maciel. He added that authorities at the municipal, departmental, and national levels have failed to act on repeated requests.
The demonstrators are calling on authorities to address their complaints before a serious accident occurs. They warn that nighttime travel is particularly risky because the potholes are nearly invisible in the dark.
