Coronel Oviedo experienced a day of patriotic fervor on May 14, 2026, as a civic-student march commemorating the 215th anniversary of Paraguay's Independence caused significant traffic disruptions in the city center. According to El Nacional, the event, which drew 36 educational institutions from the district, forced temporary closures on major thoroughfares, particularly Avenida Dr. Blas Garay (also known as Route PY08).
The parade, which included students, teachers, parents, and local, departmental, and national authorities, mobilized a large portion of the educational community. To manage the crowds, the municipality and organizers implemented a special traffic operation with road closures and detours along the parade route.
The official ceremony began around 07:10, followed by the student parade that extended until after 15:00. This year, the event was restructured to include only public and subsidized schools, excluding civil organizations that had participated in previous years. Organizers explained that the change aimed to shorten the parade, which in past years had stretched into the late afternoon, and to better coordinate the large number of participating institutions.
The march was part of the official festivities for the national holidays of May 14 and 15, key dates in Paraguay's independence commemoration.
