Operation Omega: International child sexual exploitation network using cryptocurrencies dismantled in Santa Rita

Operation Omega, a coordinated action among nine countries, resulted in the arrest of a lawyer in Santa Rita, Alto Paraná, suspected of being part of an international network for the sale and distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) that used cryptocurrencies for transactions. Prosecutor Ruth Karina Benítez led the execution of a search and seizure warrant, which seized electronic equipment, documents, and digital storage devices. Investigations are underway to determine whether the scheme also involved local production of the material and money laundering.

In a joint operation by the Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police, the so-called Operation Omega dismantled an international child sexual exploitation network that operated in the digital environment and used cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. The action took place in the early hours of May 18, 2026, in Santa Rita, Alto Paraná department, and resulted in the arrest of a lawyer, the main suspect in the sale and distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Prosecutor Ruth Karina Benítez, from the Specialized Unit in Computer Crimes and Asset Laundering, coordinated the execution of the search and seizure warrant, carried out from 6:30 a.m., with support from the Specialized Department in Cybercrime Investigation of the National Police and the Regional Office of Alto Paraná. During the operation, computers, digital storage devices, cell phones, SIM cards, and documents of interest to the investigation were seized.

Inspector Guido Roa, spokesperson for the cybercrime department, confirmed the arrest: “We have one person detained, a lawyer, who allegedly traded child pornography and abuse on digital platforms.” Roa added that all technological material will undergo forensic analysis to determine whether the scheme was limited to commercialization or also involved local production of the content.

According to information released within the scope of Operation Omega, the investigated organizations operated through social networks, encrypted platforms, and cloud storage systems, using cryptocurrencies to conceal the origin of funds. The authorities do not rule out the configuration of crimes such as criminal association and money laundering.

Operation Omega is an international action coordinated among specialized agencies from nine countries, aimed at combating child sexual exploitation in digital environments and related computer crimes. The Public Prosecutor's Office and the National Police continue with the investigations to clarify the facts and determine any criminal responsibilities.
