The Mexican national football team gained three important reinforcements on Monday (18). Midfielder Edson Álvarez, from Fenerbahce (Turkey), right-back Jorge Sánchez, from PAOK (Greece), and young defender Mateo Chávez, from AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands), reported to the group preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
The three athletes are part of the squad that will play the last three preparation friendlies. The first will be on Friday against Ghana at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla. Next, the team faces Australia at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena (California, USA). The preparation will conclude against Serbia at the Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca.
Edson Álvarez, one of the leaders of coach Javier “Vasco” Aguirre's team, recovered from an ankle injury suffered early in the year, which limited his playing time at the end of the Turkish Super League. Jorge Sánchez, also considered a trusted player by the coach, had an inconsistent performance in Greece. Mateo Chávez, 22, stood out for his consistency in the Dutch Eredivisie and is seen as one of the young promises of the national team.
With the arrival of the three, the group already includes Guillermo Ochoa and other players who play abroad. The expectation is that the rest of the squad will report in the coming days, before the World Cup debut scheduled for June 11 against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.
