Paraguay Attorney General Seeks Budget Doubling to Reach 700 Prosecutors

Paraguay's Attorney General Emiliano Rolón Fernández appeared before the Chamber of Deputies to request a budget increase to double the number of prosecutors from 350 to 700, citing insufficient resources to meet citizen demand. The request comes after the Senate approved only a fraction of the needed funds.

Paraguay's Attorney General Emiliano Rolón Fernández appeared before the Chamber of Deputies on May 13, 2026, to request a significant budget increase aimed at doubling the number of prosecutors from the current 350 to 700, according to Ultima Hora. Rolón stated that while 40 new prosecutors and their assistants were recently added, the institution still falls short of the required workforce.

“We managed to incorporate 40 new prosecutors with their respective assistants, but it remains insufficient because we need 700, and this also involves installing this national debate, discussing with the Executive, to whom I proposed raising awareness of the need,” Rolón said, as quoted by Ultima Hora.

Rolón warned that if the Executive responds with “national impossibility,” then “we sacrifice an institution that must be purely republican.” The Senate had previously approved a budget increase of G. 7.4 billion (about USD 1.2 million) for salary adjustments for deputy and agent prosecutors, but Rolón had sought USD 20 million in discussions with the Executive. He noted that requests made since his arrival in 2023, including a G. 80 billion request, have not been heeded.

Chamber President Raúl Latorre acknowledged the institution's budgetary shortcomings and pledged to manage resources, especially for scientific and forensic areas. The meeting also included prosecutor Patricia Sánchez, who had reportedly received threats from former senator Hernán Rivas regarding a case involving an alleged false diploma. Latorre expressed support for Sánchez and the justice system.
