In a ceremony marking the 215th anniversary of Paraguay's independence, Cardinal Adalberto Martínez Flores used the traditional Te Deum at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Asunción to deliver a sharp critique of corruption, clientelism, and the misappropriation of public funds. The homily was delivered in the presence of President Santiago Peña, Vice President Pedro Alliana, and other top officials from the three branches of government, as reported by El Nacional.
Cardinal Martínez stated that such practices "degrade ethics" and disproportionately harm the most vulnerable sectors of society. He also urged the strengthening of the independence of state powers, warning that it must not become a "utopia" within Paraguay's democratic system. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of expression and responsible journalism as democratic pillars.
Despite government claims of economic stability, the cardinal noted that the country still faces deep social inequalities, particularly in health, education, land access, and the protection of indigenous and rural communities. He also called for the upcoming municipal elections to be conducted with respect and without personal attacks, prioritizing the well-being of future generations over short-term political interests.
The ceremony was attended by President Peña, Vice President Alliana, Congress President Basilio Núñez, Chamber of Deputies President Raúl Latorre, as well as ministers, legislators, judicial authorities, and representatives of the Armed Forces and National Police. Former President and ANR leader Horacio Cartes, along with diplomats and political leaders from various sectors, were also present.
