On the afternoon of May 18, 2026, a fire struck two commercial stalls at the Limpio Market, located in the city of Limpio, Central Department. The fire, which was reportedly caused by an electrical fault, consumed two rooms approximately 3x6 meters each, which sold flammable products such as clothing and footwear.

Volunteer firefighters managed to control the flames but reported difficulties due to the lack of hydrants in the area. Trader Basilio, who has a stall next to those affected, stated that “the electrical installation is very old and that creates the greatest danger. It is very easy to have a short circuit, and once that happens, it becomes very difficult to control.” He also highlighted that “in this area there are no hydrants, and therefore we have no way to take the first measures against a fire. Often, by the time firefighters arrive, it is already too late.”

The incident reignited the debate over safety at the market, which had already recorded similar occurrences in other areas. Traders are trying to resume activities while demanding improvements in electrical infrastructure and fire prevention.
