TSJE Maintains Date of Internal Party Elections, But Offers New Technical Explanations

The Superior Electoral Court (TSJE) of Paraguay reaffirmed that internal party elections will take place on June 7, according to the original calendar. Despite requests for review, the court is willing to hold up to two days of technical clarifications on the voting machines, which already underwent an audit in February with participation from parties and international observers.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSJE) of Paraguay announced that it will not change the date of internal party elections, scheduled for June 7, but committed to repeating technical explanations on the operation of voting machines for parties that still have doubts. The decision was communicated by Minister Jaime Bestard, who highlighted that the electoral calendar was prepared well in advance and strictly followed so far.

Bestard explained that the audits of electronic voting machines took place between February 1 and 27, with the presence of technical representatives from all political forces, as well as foreign experts from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Center for Electoral Advice and Promotion (CAPEL). “Throughout the month, many technical representatives of political forces were here at the Electoral Court, and the process proceeded absolutely normally,” the minister said in an interview with Gen.

Despite this, in recent days questions have arisen about the system's security, leading some sectors to request a new audit outside the stipulated deadline. In response, the TSJE has shown itself open to receiving technicians from interested parties to clarify doubts, but without repeating the full February process. “We are willing to hold meetings next week, preparing our team to provide all necessary explanations, while maintaining the date of the internal elections,” Bestard said. He added that up to two days will be dedicated to these exclusive sessions.

The electoral calendar remains unchanged: internal party elections will take place on June 7 and municipal elections on October 4. The measure seeks to guarantee legal certainty of the process, while the TSJE tries to dispel last-minute distrust.
