This Tuesday, May 19, marks World Human Milk Donation Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and the essential role of donor mothers in feeding premature or ill babies. Hospitals, milk banks, and health organizations are promoting activities to encourage this charitable practice.

Human milk is considered the most complete food for newborns, providing essential nutrients and immune defenses that promote growth and reduce the risk of disease. In cases of neonatal hospitalization, donation helps ensure safe feeding for infants who cannot be temporarily breastfed by their own mothers.

Neonatology experts highlight that a small donated amount can benefit several babies, especially those with low birth weight. Therefore, campaigns aim to inform about the extraction, storage, and delivery process, as well as to debunk myths related to donation.

Human milk banks operate under strict sanitary controls. There, the milk is analyzed, pasteurized, and distributed to medical centers that need it. Health authorities emphasize that lactating women who produce surplus can become donors voluntarily and free of charge.

In several countries, the events include educational lectures, tributes to collaborating mothers, and social media actions to reinforce the message about the importance of breastfeeding and sharing human milk as an act of solidarity and collective care.
