The Ballet Clásico y Moderno Municipal de Asunción (BCMM) opens its First Season of 2026 with La Sylphide, one of the pillars of the global romantic repertoire. Under the artistic direction of Miguel Bonnin, the production features choreographic restaging by international maestra Elna Matamoros Ocaña, who introduces to Paraguay the pure codes of the Danish August Bournonville school.

The performances take place on May 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and 31, always at 8:00 p.m. (except on the 24th and 31st, with special times at 7:00 p.m.), at the Teatro Municipal Ignacio A. Pane (Presidente Franco between Chile and Alberdi). The work, originally premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen on November 28, 1836, has a libretto by Adolphe Nourrit and music by Herman Severin Løvenskiold. For this production, the orchestral transcription by Alejandro Prieto Chadad was used, based on historical manuscripts from the Royal Library of Denmark.

Local choreographic assistance is coordinated by Ángel Ovelar, Mary Carmen Aquino, and Teresa Cassanello. The set design is by architect Tessy Vasconsellos, and the costumes were made by the company Sauté by Cancún. The BCMM orchestra, under the direction of conductor William Aguayo, participates in some performances, with the IMA Youth Orchestra also joining the show.

The principal roles will be alternated by a group of soloists that includes Macarena Vallejo, Pamela Giménez, Sofía Schittner, Cristina Báez, Alejandra Acosta, Teresa Cassanello, Karina Zarza, Abel Rivarola, Juan José Núñez, and Federico Fleitas.

During the season, tributes will be paid: to maestra Elna Matamoros and, in memoriam, to her mother Carmina Ocaña, for her research and teaching work dedicated to preserving the Bournonville technique in Spain; and to Mrs. Perla Benegas, former costume designer of the BCMM, for her long career and ethical commitment.

General production is managed by the Association of Friends of the Municipal Ballet, with sponsorship from Banco Sudameris and Palmaroga. Tickets are available on the Tuti platform and at the theater box office, with information by phone at 0975 555 209.
