The New Orleans Pelicans announced Monday the hiring of Jamahl Mosley as their new head coach, ending their search for a leader after a 26-56 season. Mosley, who was let go by the Orlando Magic at the end of last season, arrives with the mission of rebuilding the franchise's winning culture.
“We continue building a winning culture that our fans deserve. Jamahl is a born winner and brings the kind of leadership, accountability, and vision needed to drive our franchise forward,” Pelicans governor Gayle Benson said in a statement.
The front office highlighted two key qualities of Mosley: his ability to develop young players and his defensive intensity. These were the pillars of his work in Orlando, where he compiled a 189-221 regular-season record over five seasons starting in 2021. With a young core, he led the Magic to the playoffs in the last three campaigns but never advanced past the first round, drawing criticism for not maximizing the roster's offensive potential.
In New Orleans, Mosley will find an equally young team but with distinct challenges. The biggest question mark is Zion Williamson, expected to be the franchise's star but plagued by injuries throughout his seven NBA seasons. The team hopes the new coach can get the best out of Williamson and the rest of the group as they seek to make a leap in the league.
