Former Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo expressed solidarity with former Bolivian President Evo Morales amid the political and social crisis that has hit Bolivia for two weeks. In a statement released Wednesday, Lugo said that 'the peoples of our Americas will know how to defend the democracy and sovereignty that we have built together.'
Lugo highlighted Morales' 'unwavering commitment' to the Bolivian people and said that 'truth and dignity will prevail over any attempt at persecution or injustice.' The message was published on the former Paraguayan president's social media.
The demonstrations in Bolivia began two weeks ago, with demands including wage increases, fuel supplies, and legal reforms. On Monday, the protests resulted in attacks and looting of public institutions, such as the Departmental Court of Justice and cable car stations, as well as private buildings and businesses.
Peasant unions maintain road blockades in the department of La Paz, where there is already a shortage of food, fuel, and medical oxygen. There are also blockades in Oruro, Cochabamba, Potosí, Chuquisaca, and Santa Cruz, according to official reports, although the demonstrations are concentrated in La Paz.
The government of Rodrigo Paz, who has been in office for six months, accuses Morales of leading the mobilizations as part of an attempt to return to power. Former Latin American and Spanish presidents have expressed concern, and the United States said it will not allow Paz to be overthrown.
