In San Ignacio, Misiones, the Peasant Organization of Misiones (OCM) decided to pause its ongoing mobilization after receiving promises from the Governor's Office of Misiones and the Yacyretá Binational Entity (EBY) that food kits and funds for the productive program will be delivered by May 26.
The agreement, signed between the peasant sector and the national government through the EBY, provides for the distribution of basic food baskets to approximately 14,000 families affiliated with the OCM, in three stages throughout the year. Deliveries were supposed to begin in April, but the delay triggered the mobilization.
The assistance aims to mitigate the effects of low agricultural production caused by weather factors, especially the drought recorded between December last year and January this year. In addition to food, the productive program includes soil preparation, purchase of seeds and fertilizers, and, for families without agricultural activity, the acquisition of chicks and inputs for poultry farming.
“The authorities of the Governor's Office and the EBY promised us that by May 26 they will have distributed the food kits and transferred the resources for the productive projects. That is why we maintain the pause in the mobilization: if on the 26th the commitments are not fulfilled, on the 27th we will begin an indefinite protest,” said Ramón Benítez, a peasant leader.
