Paraguay was elected on Tuesday, June 3, to hold one of the vice-presidencies of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, corresponding to the 2026-2027 cycle. This appointment strengthens Paraguay’s presence in the global political leadership spaces within the world’s main multilateral body.
The sessions will take place between September 2026 and September 2027, with the country represented by Ambassador Marcelo Scappini, Paraguay’s permanent representative to the UN. Paraguay previously held a vice-presidency of the General Assembly during the 2020-2021 period, when the position was held by then-Ambassador César Arriola.
As a member of the vice-presidency, Paraguay will participate in the deliberative work and assist the presidency of the General Assembly, the body that brings together the 193 UN member states. For the 2026-2027 period, the presidency will be held by Bengali diplomat Khalilur Rahman.
The General Assembly Bureau is composed of the president, the vice-presidents, the chairs of the six main committees, and representatives of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
