Paraguay’s Senate investigates why YouTube blocked a session video

The Senate of Paraguay said that the video of its ordinary session blocked on YouTube remains available on its institutional website and Facebook page. Senate Secretary-General Antonio Sánchez said the institution had not yet received an official explanation from the platform and that technical teams were continuing to investigate the case.

Sánchez said the session’s content had never become entirely unavailable. According to him, the leading hypothesis for the block is a possible copyright infringement, rather than censorship related to the debate held during the session.

The secretary-general said that footage of the Paraguayan national team’s goals was shown during a tribute presented by Senator Juan Carlos “Nano” Galaverna. The images came from the official World Cup broadcast and are protected by FIFA copyright. Sánchez stressed that there was still no official confirmation of the reason, and that images and audio related to the Paraguayan team had been used on previous occasions without problems.

According to Sánchez, there is currently no indication that the block was prompted by offensive or racist remarks against French footballer Kylian Mbappé, as had been reported in some media.
