The first “Paraguay Taiwan” international forum was announced for September 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Aula Magna of the Rectorate of the Catholic University of Asunción. According to the announcement, the event will be open to the public and Taiwan’s ambassador to Paraguay, Iván Yueh-Jung Lee, will attend.
Organizer José Ocampos said the forum would address Taiwan’s strategic role, its geopolitical challenges and its relevance to Latin America and Paraguay. He said it would be the first forum of its kind in the country.
Ocampos described Taiwan as a bulwark of Western values, freedom and democracy. He also said the discussion should consider China’s political and economic system, military exercises and threats he attributed to Beijing.
The organizer said the discussion should go beyond cooperation, scholarships and Taiwan’s contributions to Paraguay, and include the values that he says the island represents. The initiative was announced as a forum on Taiwan’s challenges in the world.
