Ayoreo Filmmaker Mateo Sobode Chiqueno Screens 'Ujirei' at Museo del Barro

Mateo Sobode Chiqueno's experimental film 'Ujirei' will be shown Saturday at Museo del Barro in Asunción, followed by a discussion with the Ayoreo documentarian.

This Saturday at 18:00, the Museo del Barro in Asunción will screen Ujirei, an experimental film by Ayoreo documentarian Mateo Sobode Chiqueno, as part of the Activaciones en Sala 2026 program. The event includes a guided visit to the museum's Indigenous art collection and a post-screening conversation with the filmmaker.

Produced in 2017, Ujirei explores daily life and relationships among the Ayoreo people with cojñone (non-Indigenous people), both inside and outside the evangelical mission where Sobode Chiqueno lives. The film reflects on resistance to dispossession and social instability.

Sobode Chiqueno began documenting his community in the late 1970s, amassing a large archive of cassette and audiovisual recordings. His work was featured in Arami Ullón's 2021 documentary Apenas el Sol.

Admission is free but requires advance registration through the museum's online form. The screening is supported by Cineclub Itinerante. Activaciones en Sala 2026 is a monthly initiative aimed at engaging the public with the museum's collections through participatory activities.
