Paraguay's President Santiago Peña used a government outreach day in the department of Caazapá to express political support for Vice President Pedro Alliana, signaling him as his preferred successor for the presidency in the 2028 elections. During an official ceremony in the departmental capital, Peña said nothing would please him more than to continue serving alongside Alliana after his term ends.
The head of the executive branch was accompanied by Alliana, whom leaders of the Honor Colorado movement have identified as the faction's future presidential pre-candidate. While Alliana's candidacy is seen as a done deal within the group, the choice of his vice-presidential running mate remains open.
Alliana announced that the running mate will be chosen after the municipal internal elections scheduled for June 7. Political signals point to Urban Planning, Housing, and Habitat Minister Juan Carlos Baruja as the most likely pick, with the backing of former president and Honor Colorado leader Horacio Cartes.
In the same speech, Peña praised Baruja's management, noting that housing deliveries under his leadership surpassed the records of previous administrations. Baruja, who holds the ministry while on leave from the Senate, was explicitly commended by the president during the ceremony.
The government outreach day in Caazapá resulted in the distribution of public resources to the department's 11 districts. A total of 450 property titles, 55 housing units, and scholarships for 233 university students were handed over.
In addition, the Yacyretá Binational Entity (EBY) carried out productive support actions, distributing inputs valued at 4 billion guaraníes to 3,296 local producers. The benefits included seeds for subsistence and fruit production, poultry and beekeeping kits, freezers for market vendors, equipment for municipal agricultural offices, and the reactivation of a local government nursery.
