Asunción's microcenter was taken over by four-legged patriots on May 14 as Paraguay celebrated 215 years of independence. The annual Jagua Patriota parade, organized by the creators of the PulgApp mobile application since 2016, saw hundreds of dogs dressed in traditional and historical costumes strut before the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes, according to Ultima Hora.
Canines of all sizes, breeds, and colors competed in categories including best patriotic outfit, best duo (pet and owner), puppy, juky (most charming), and valé (most talented). Prizes included accessories, pet food, and professional photo sessions. Notably, some dogs participated in wheelchairs, demonstrating that joy knows no limits.
Verónica Mongelós was among the owners who dressed up her two dogs in patriotic outfits. The event also featured a military canine unit from the Paraguayan Army, which marched with discipline before President Santiago Peña's reviewing stand along the Costanera de Asunción. Approximately 3,000 troops—2,400 military and 600 police—participated in the main parade, alongside vehicles such as tactical trucks, Humvees, and Cascabel and Urutau tanks, as well as naval and air force contingents with Super Tucano and Tucano aircraft.
The Jagua Patriota parade has grown since its inception in 2016, with hundreds of pet owners signing up via the app to showcase their dogs. Many spectators also brought their own pets to watch the festivities.
