A high-speed chase that started in Brazil crossed into Paraguay on Sunday, resulting in the death of a woman and the arrest of a man in Pedro Juan Caballero, Amambay department.
According to reports, the occupants of a car attempted to evade a police checkpoint on the outskirts of Ponta Porã and fled toward the border. Brazil's Military Highway Police pursued the vehicle into Paraguayan territory, tracking it to a rural property in the Portera Ortiz colony, about 15 kilometers from downtown Pedro Juan Caballero.
The car ended up at the bottom of a swimming pool on the property. Inside, officers found a woman identified as Maykelly Araújo Points, who was rescued and taken to the Regional Hospital of Ponta Porã, where she later died from severe injuries sustained during the flight.
The driver, Vinícius Thiago Basílio da Silva, 33, was arrested and transferred back to Brazil. Authorities recovered approximately five kilograms of marijuana and a revolver with its serial number erased from the vehicle.
The car showed multiple bullet impacts, a detail that investigators will need to clarify as the case proceeds.
