After three years of delays and four failed attempts, the former mayor of San Pedro de Ycuamandyyú, Gustavo Rodríguez (ANR-HC), finally began trial on May 12. Judge Matías Garcete, specialized in economic crimes, has called for the continuation of the oral trial this Monday at 8 a.m., with Rodríguez and nine other defendants.
Rodríguez was charged on March 7, 2023, but obtained a provisional dismissal on September 8 of the same year. On October 10, 2025, he was formally accused and has since used various legal resources to avoid trial. Now, he faces justice to clarify the fate of San Pedro taxpayers' money.
Prosecutors Elena Fiore and Christian Cáceres presented a list of 18 witnesses and more than 200 documentary pieces of evidence in four volumes to support the charge of breach of trust. In addition to Rodríguez, the following are being tried: Vicente Darío Báez Benítez (Administration Director), Sergio Isasi Schweighart (Municipal Cashier), Fátima María Pereira Ocampo (Works Inspector), Gisselle Nohemi Irala Cáceres (Treasurer), José Luis Baruja Legal (Accountant), Rubén Alder Leguizamón (Administrative Employee), Diego Armando Espínola Olmedo (Administration Director), and Pedro Antonio Morel Arévalos (Director of the Operational Procurement Unit).
Óscar Raúl Cañete Delgado, representative of the company RC Construcciones and a supplier to the municipality, was sentenced in November 2025 to two years in prison with a suspended sentence, following a summary procedure. He is paying in installments the property damage caused to the municipal coffers.
