Playa Pirayú, the main tourist attraction of Carmen del Paraná in the department of Itapúa, woke up partially in the dark after the theft of cables from the public lighting system in the early hours of Tuesday (19). Security cameras installed at the site captured two men handling the electrical wiring and removing conductors from the resort, causing significant damage to the lighting network.
The Municipality of Carmen del Paraná confirmed that it has already filed a complaint with the National Police, who are analyzing the recordings to identify the suspects. The crime mainly affected the areas most frequented by visitors and merchants on weekends and at night.
Cable theft has become a recurring problem in several regions of the country. The National Electricity Administration (ANDE) had already warned weeks ago about the repetition of cases of theft of electrical conductors that compromise public lighting and energy infrastructure.
Residents and merchants in the region expressed concern about the lack of lighting, which increases the feeling of insecurity at the resort, especially at night. They call for greater oversight to prevent further acts of vandalism.
Municipal authorities reported that they are already working on replacing the damaged wiring to fully restore the lighting system as soon as possible. Playa Pirayú is one of the most sought-after summer destinations in Itapúa, attracting thousands of visitors and hosting gastronomic and recreational activities.
