Asunción’s traditional San Jerónimo neighborhood is showing a new face after sunset. Under a canopy of warm lights, the narrow cobblestone alleys and colorful walls now glow with an intimate charm, according to a report by Ultima Hora. The illumination is part of a broader revitalization effort led by the National Tourism Secretariat (Senatur) to turn the area into a nighttime tourist destination.
The project lights up the alleyways, corners, and the emblematic oratory, allowing residents and visitors to appreciate the barrio’s beauty even after dark. Senatur Minister Jacinto Santa María Ammatuna told Ultima Hora that the strategy has always been to work closely with legally constituted neighborhood organizations in Loma San Jerónimo, ensuring the community leads its own tourism development. “It is a priority for Senatur to preserve the cultural identity and essence of the neighborhood while we promote new attractions and modernize tourism in Asunción,” he said.
The lighting design is subtle and respectful of the environment, using warm tones that complement the traditional architecture and community spaces. Alongside the illumination, Senatur is supporting facade recovery and mural painting that respect the original colors, which the minister said “helps maintain the collective memory of the community.”
Community and cultural initiatives are also part of the package, including mural workshops, support for local entrepreneurs, and traditional celebrations such as San Juan Loma San Jerónimo and the centennial of the Oratory and Club Loma San Jerónimo.
