A large fire hit the Limpio Municipal Market on the afternoon of Sunday, May 17, 2026, destroying two commercial halls and mobilizing volunteer firefighters and the National Police. A large fire hit the Limpio Municipal Market on the afternoon of Sunday, May 17, 2026, destroying two adjacent commercial halls and causing moments of tension among merchants and local residents. The fire started around 5 p.m. at the intersection of Fulgencio Yegros Street and San José Avenue, spreading quickly and producing thick smoke.

Teams of volunteer firefighters from the 18th Company of Limpio (K18 yellows), with support from the blue firefighters, were called and managed to control the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to other establishments. The National Police, through the 9th Central Police Station, under the command of Commissioner María Insfrán and Inspector Officer Julio Ayala, cordoned off the perimeter and coordinated the emergency response.

One of the affected businesses belongs to Jonathan David Franco Núñez, 29, a resident of the San Pedro neighborhood. The fire completely destroyed a large quantity of merchandise, including clothes, shoes, and other items that were on display and in storage. Authorities confirmed there were no fatalities or injuries, but material losses are considerable.

According to initial reports, the probable cause of the fire is a short circuit in the internal electrical connections, but the hypothesis still depends on technical expertise for official confirmation. Merchants and residents are anxiously following the work of the teams while awaiting a detailed report on the extent of the losses.
