The PLRA proclaims Alcides Riveros president and consolidates the hegemony of Nuevo Liberalismo in Asunción

The PLRA proclaimed Alcides Riveros as president for the 2026–2031 term, consolidating the hegemony of the Nuevo Liberalismo movement in Asunción.

The Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) will hold the official proclamation and certificate ceremony for the newly elected authorities from the recent internal elections on Thursday, June 18. The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the party headquarters, located at 936 Iturbe Street in Asunción.

During the ceremony, the Independent Electoral Tribunal (TEI), chaired by Gustavo Bernal, will formally swear in Alcides Riveros as the new president of the PLRA. Riveros, who serves as mayor of Fernando de la Mora, takes the helm of Paraguay's main opposition party for the 2026–2031 term.

In addition to Riveros, Congressman Antonio Buzarquis will be sworn in as first vice president and Julia Rivas as second vice president, along with the elected members of the National Board and departmental directors. The internal electoral process was completed after the review of the minutes and the resolution of incidents filed following the elections.

This event marks the beginning of a new institutional chapter for the PLRA, consolidating the legitimacy of the elected authorities. The new leadership reflects the hegemony of the Nuevo Liberalismo movement within the party, led by the governor of the Central department and 2028 presidential pre-candidate Ricardo Estigarribia.

The Nuevo Liberalismo movement won 19 of the 30 seats on the National Board, in addition to the presidency of the Authentic Radical Liberal Youth (JLRA) and the majority of mayoral candidacies for the October 4 municipal elections. The Liberal Convention, the party's highest body, is still expected to announce the results of the 585 elected members who will validate the political platforms and electoral alliances for the upcoming general and presidential elections.
