Suspected Thief Returns to Scene, Subdued by Family in Ypané

A man with a prior record allegedly stole tools and a battery from a Ypané home early Friday, then returned hours later. Recognized by the victim, he fled into a private residence where residents subdued him until police arrived.

A 40-year-old man with a prior record for domestic violence was arrested Friday after allegedly stealing tools and a battery from a home in Ypané and then returning to the same neighborhood hours later, where he was recognized and subdued by residents.

The suspect, identified as Diego Iván Ferriol, allegedly entered a home that also operates as a scrapyard around 4:30 a.m. Friday. He took a 90-amp battery from a pickup truck and various tools belonging to the homeowner, who discovered the theft upon waking and reviewed security camera footage. The victim filed a formal complaint at the 23rd Police Station in Ypané.

Around 1:00 p.m., the victim saw Ferriol again near his home. He confronted the suspect and called police. Ferriol attempted to flee on foot for about 300 meters before climbing a wall and entering a private property to hide.

Ferriol landed in the backyard of a home where a family was celebrating Mother’s Day with lunch. The homeowner and his son quickly subdued the intruder, holding him down until police, led by Deputy Commissioner Mario Gamarra, arrived and handcuffed him.

Once in custody, Ferriol reportedly confessed that he no longer had the stolen items, claiming he had sold them shortly after the burglary. He was placed in the police station’s cell under free communication, charged with home burglary, at the disposal of prosecutor Rosanna Martínez of J. Augusto Saldívar.
