Luque Residents Denounce Toxic Dump Behind City Hall

Residents of Luque demand authorities intervene over a clandestine dump operating behind the city hall building, with reports of nighttime dumping, unbearable odors, and pest proliferation.

A group of Luque residents has denounced the existence of a large-scale clandestine dump that, ironically, is operating on a plot of land located directly behind the Municipal City Hall building, next to the municipal depot.

What was once an area of farms was supposedly recently acquired by the local administration. However, instead of becoming a space for development, the site has turned into a contamination hotspot that directly affects the quality of life of neighboring families.

Marta Peralta, one of the affected residents, described the situation as unsustainable. She stated that the dump is highly toxic and that all kinds of waste are dumped there without any treatment for leachate—the contaminating liquids that come from decomposing debris.

“We have a serious health problem. There is a lot of bad smell, flies, mosquitoes, and cockroaches everywhere. There is no will on the part of the Intendancy or the municipal executives to take this danger seriously,” lamented the resident.

In videos released by the residents themselves, it is possible to see the enormous amount of garbage accumulated on the site. The complainants pointed out that workers often move the debris and work at the site around midnight and during the early morning hours, seeking to avoid complaints from the community during the day.

“This disaster is being organized by the City Hall's own people. It attracts rats, cockroaches, and all kinds of pests. We are not sure what legal measures we can take, because this is already excessive,” complained another of those affected in the recording.

According to the protesters, residents have tried on several occasions to establish a dialogue with local authorities to demand the removal of the waste or proper environmental management. However, they claim that the Intendancy refuses to provide explanations.
