On Wednesday, May 20, Paraguay commemorates the 180th anniversary of the lyrics of its National Anthem, a milestone celebrated by the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Alberto Martínez Simón. In an official statement, he emphasized that the anthem is “a symbol of our homeland and identity, in which the values that have inspired this Republic since its birth are expressed.”

Martínez Simón recalled that on May 20, 1846, Uruguayan poet Francisco Acuña de Figueroa delivered the lyrics of the patriotic song to then-President Carlos Antonio López. The original score, however, was lost over time, and the currently used musical version is the result of a reconstruction by maestro Remberto Giménez, considered one of the country's most prominent musicians.

In celebrating the date, the Supreme Court reaffirmed its commitment to the National Constitution, the rule of law, and the values of freedom, independence, and equality that inspire the Republic of Paraguay.
