A Paraguayan Navy petty officer died after crashing through a security barrier and shooting himself in front of the Government Palace in Asunción in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Jonatan Adrián Vergara, 28, who worked in the Navy's Administration and Finance Department, arrived at the location around 3 a.m. driving a vehicle, collided with the fence at the corner of Paraguayo Independiente and Ayolas streets, and attempted to proceed towards the palace.

According to Subcommissioner Diego Carrillo of the First Police Precinct of Asunción, after being intercepted by police and military personnel, Vergara got out of the car, drew a weapon, pointed it at the officers, and then fired a shot at himself, dying at the scene.

The Public Prosecutor's Office and forensic experts from the National Police's Criminalistics unit cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the serviceman's motivations. He was in civilian clothes and had no prior history of similar incidents.
