Bachi Núñez demands equal judicial treatment for Prieto and Galeano cases

Congress President Basilio Núñez called for the roughly 50 lawsuits against former Ciudad del Este mayor Miguel Prieto to be handled with the same rigor as the case of former senator Erico Galeano, already sentenced to 13 years in prison. Núñez challenged claims that the judiciary is controlled by the Cartismo movement, noting that Supreme Court justices were appointed by previous governments.

National Congress President Basilio Núñez argued that the roughly 50 lawsuits against former Ciudad del Este mayor Miguel Prieto, removed for corruption, should be treated with the same equality as the case of former senator Erico Galeano, already held at the National Pretrial Detention Center (formerly Tacumbú) awaiting confirmation of a 13-year prison sentence.

"This dismantles the narrative of a Cartismo-controlled judiciary, for all the sectors that claim this branch is controlled by the Cartismo movement," Núñez said at a press conference. "While some face between 50 and 60 charges and run for president, others are treated differently."

Prieto, who was removed from the mayor's office on August 19, 2025, by the Chamber of Deputies for acts of corruption, is accelerating his presidential campaign while facing cases such as the Tía Chela and Tajy cases, related to unexecuted projects during the pandemic and alleged overbilling and embezzlement.

Núñez also criticized the origin of Supreme Court justices, stating that many were appointed by previous governments and not by the current administration. "They say the judiciary is Cartista, but several justices were put in place by Abdista governments and certain media outlets that are their allies," he declared.

Most of the criminal complaints against Prieto were filed by the Ciudad del Este Citizen Comptroller's Office (CCDCE), a non-governmental organization that brings together professionals from various fields, such as lawyers, journalists, accountants, architects, and economists.
