Las Residentas overpass construction causes lane closures but promises to end traffic chaos

Work on the Las Residentas corridor in Asunción is blocking lanes and causing delays, but the MOPC says the new interchange will eliminate the historic bottleneck by late May.

Construction of the future overpass on the Las Residentas corridor in Asunción has entered a critical phase that is causing immediate disruption for drivers. A 300-meter stretch currently has the left lane blocked in both directions due to simultaneous drainage work and structure assembly.

The project includes widening the road, upgrading the drainage system, and improving urban connectivity with a focus on road safety. "We are monitoring the assembly of the base structure for the future overpass we will have in this area. This is an interchange that helps solve the capacity problem we currently have at the Las Residentas intersection, which is completely gridlocked," said engineer Alejandro Bordón, director of roads at the MOPC.

According to Bordón, the work will eliminate the historic bottleneck at the junction and provide better service to users. In addition, more than 500 meters of open channels will be installed to tackle the area's chronic flooding.

The schedule indicates that the current work will continue until May 26. After that, backfilling and pavement reconstruction will take place, followed by the installation of prefabricated pillars. This stage will require a full road closure, using large cranes. "That will be done on a Sunday, when traffic is much lighter," the director explained.
