The National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), Paraguay's telecommunications regulator, has authorized regulatory conditions that expand the service provision capacity of the company Starlink in the country. The company, owned by South African magnate Elon Musk, has been operating in Paraguay since October 2023 with a license for data transmission and satellite internet.
The measure allows Starlink, which operates a constellation of over 3,000 satellites in non-geostationary orbit, to expand its high-speed internet offering. The goal is to improve connectivity access, especially in rural communities and hard-to-reach areas where traditional infrastructure is limited.
According to an official statement, the decision positions Paraguay among the first countries in the region to bet on this new generation of satellite technology, consolidating a favorable environment for innovation and digital transformation. The expansion is expected to benefit schools, health centers, and public institutions, in addition to generating new opportunities for work, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country's technological infrastructure and reduce connectivity gaps. Greater digital coverage is also expected to boost e-commerce, distance learning, telework, and the adoption of technologies in productive sectors such as agriculture and logistics.
