The Paraguayan Communications Company (Copaco) and its mobile operator Vox need an investment of approximately $100 million to modernize their infrastructure and compete in the future 5G technology market in Paraguay. The information was disclosed by Alejandro Villamayor, general secretary of the Telecommunications Workers Union (SINATTEL).
Villamayor emphasized that the amount would allow for a deep technological upgrade, including restructuring the current network and preparing the necessary infrastructure to support the new generation of mobile connectivity. He noted that 5G implementation is not just about upgrading equipment but also requires a significant expansion of telecommunications infrastructure.
"For 5G, we would need equipment every 100 to 150 meters to move forward," Villamayor explained. He highlighted the importance of radiobases, which serve as transmission and reception points for signals between different antennas, enabling the distribution of data and mobile communications.
The union leader also mentioned that Paraguay's current infrastructure still has limitations for a large-scale rollout of the new technology. According to him, most operators rely on leasing facilities to expand their coverage. "Currently, almost no operator has the necessary number of radiobases in Paraguay, and what they do is rent. None of them have full ownership," he stated.
