Daniel Pereira Mujica resigns as mayor of Ciudad del Este; Pedro Acuña takes over on an interim basis

Daniel Pereira Mujica resigned as mayor of Ciudad del Este to focus on his election campaign, and Pedro Acuña was elected interim mayor by the Municipal Council.

Daniel Pereira Mujica officially resigned on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from his post as mayor (intendente) of Ciudad del Este — Paraguay's second-largest city and a key tri-border commercial hub with Brazil and Argentina — to fully dedicate himself to his reelection campaign ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. The resignation was submitted at 8 a.m. and immediately added to the agenda of the Municipal Council's ordinary session, which accepted the resignation by majority vote.

The Municipal Council then held a secret ballot to choose the new interim mayor, as provided for by legal procedure. Councilman Pedro Acuña, a member of the Yo Creo political movement, was elected with eight votes in his favor. During the session, Colorado Party councilors Liz Magnolia Pereira and Ernesto Guerin left the chamber before the vote.

Pedro Acuña, who already held prominent positions in the municipal legislature, will take over the administration of the Ciudad del Este Municipality until the next elections, scheduled for November 2026. His main challenge will be ensuring the continuity of public services and the execution of ongoing projects, maintaining administrative stability during the electoral period.

The president of the Municipal Council, Alison Anisimoff, explained that Mujica's resignation was made so that he could focus entirely on the electoral campaign. Mujica, of the National Democratic Conscience Party and an ally of the Yo Creo movement, had taken office as mayor in November 2025 after winning special elections called to replace Miguel Prieto, who had been previously removed from office.

A notable point in the process was that Pedro Acuña's direct substitute on the Municipal Council is Rigoberto Chamorro, a Colorado Party pre-candidate for the mayoralty of Ciudad del Este. Chamorro was elected as an alternate councilor by Yo Creo and is eligible to fill the seat left by Acuña, since the legal incompatibility applies only to the simultaneous exercise of executive functions.

Pedro Acuña is a close ally of former mayor Miguel Prieto and is part of the Yo Creo caucus on the Municipal Council. Despite his political backing, Acuña has previously faced scrutiny related to an investigation into an alleged scheme to divert public funds in the bidding process for the Costanera Ñande Renda works in 2021.

With the resignation formalized and Acuña sworn in, Dani Mujica formally begins his campaign to seek a new term, betting on the continuity of the political project he represents, while the municipal administration moves forward under new leadership until the next local officials are chosen.
