DNIT, Paraguay's tax and customs authority, is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Business Intelligence (BI) to identify inconsistencies in taxpayer declarations. The institution's executive manager, Braulio Ferreira, confirmed the use of these technologies, stating that the current focus is on the quality of controls, not just the quantity.
Ferreira explained that the tax administration's auditing capacity is limited by the number of taxpayers and the available human resources. To overcome this limitation, DNIT is heavily relying on technology, including AI, BI, and big data, to make tax enforcement actions more specific and effective.
The executive also highlighted the crucial role of electronic invoices in this process, as they allow for more efficient control by providing the taxpayer's complete transaction history. The statements were made during an interview with radio station 1020 AM.
Regarding revenue collection, Ferreira mentioned that tax revenues were impacted by exchange rate fluctuations, especially in the customs sector, where settlements are made in US dollars. He recalled that while the US dollar was quoted at G 7,700 in the middle of last year, it ended June at G 6,100, which resulted in a drop in revenue when measured in guaraní. Despite this, revenue in the first half of the year exceeded a 2% expansion, driven by the dynamism of domestic taxes.
