The Public Prosecutor's Office has requested that a Guarantees Court dismiss the complaint filed against the Paraguayan director of Itaipú Binacional, Justo Zacarías Irún, regarding the purchase of over 410,000 sets of desks and chairs imported from China.
Prosecutors Luis Piñánez, Luz Guerrero, and Christian Benítez stated that the investigation found no evidence of overpricing, bid rigging, or financial loss to the State. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, comparative technical analyses ruled out the existence of overbilling, deeming the amount paid to the company Kamamya S.A. – exceeding G. 310.67 billion – to be consistent with market parameters.
The office also emphasized that the furniture was delivered to the Ministry of Education and Sciences (MEC), fulfilling the contractual obligations. Despite the prosecutors' decision, the case continues to spark public debate over the quality of the furniture and suspicions of irregularities in the procurement process.
