The defense of former Senator Erico Galeano, sentenced to 13 years in prison for money laundering, organized crime, and drug trafficking, has filed an unconstitutionality action with the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. The appeal seeks to annul two judicial decisions: Final Sentence No. 68 of March 4, 2026, and Ruling No. 10 issued by the Court of Appeals on May 4.
Attorneys Luis Fernando Almada Sánchez and Ricardo Raúl Estigarribia Chávez, representing Galeano, argue that the proceedings violated constitutional guarantees, including parliamentary immunity, the right to defense, the presumption of innocence, and adequate reasoning of decisions. In addition to annulment, they request the immediate suspension of the effects of the convictions while the Court reviews the appeal.
The Constitutional Chamber will now decide whether to admit the action and grant the requested suspension, which could temporarily halt the execution of Galeano's sentence. The case is linked to Operation "A Ultranza," which investigates a money laundering and drug trafficking network.
