A large-scale fire destroyed around 70% of the Nápoles nightclub, located in the microcenter of Asunción, on Sunday the 26th. The fire started around noon near the intersection of 15 de Agosto and Presidente Franco streets in the central area of the Paraguayan capital.
According to the establishment's owner, Héctor Vergara, the incident is believed to have been caused by homeless individuals attempting to steal copper cables from the air conditioning system. "This is the third or fourth time this has happened, but now it resulted in greater damage," Vergara stated in an interview. The venue had closed at 6 a.m. after a normal night of operation, and there were no victims.
Volunteer firefighters from several companies worked for hours to control the flames. Ray Mendoza, commander of the Volunteer Fire Department of Paraguay, reported that the fire was "contained" and no longer posed a risk of spreading to neighboring properties. The building is located near an old, abandoned building belonging to the Ministry of Education and Sciences, which is frequented by homeless people.
