Attorney Guillermo Gayoso, legal representative for the former governor of Central Department, Hugo Javier González, stated that his client told family members he was beaten with a "boxing glove" during his confinement at the Industrial Penitentiary Unit Esperanza in Asunción. According to Gayoso, González reportedly said he was severely beaten and had to pay to avoid being killed. The allegation comes as the Public Prosecutor's Office investigates the circumstances of the traumatic brain injury suffered by the politician, initially attributed to a fall in his cell.
González has been hospitalized since September 6 in the intensive care unit of Itauguá National Hospital, where he is also being treated for bacterial meningitis. According to the defense attorney, the patient's health improved significantly in recent days; he began speaking words again, although he exhibits temporal confusion and asks about his deceased father. This recovery of speech has renewed public attention on the official version of events.
The defense alleges obstruction of access to justice. Gayoso revealed that he requested a copy of the prosecutor's investigation file, composed of three volumes, but the request was denied by the prosecution. In an interview with Radio 780 AM, cited by the Hoy portal, the lawyer reported receiving the response that not even Hugo Javier himself could retrieve the documents at this time, generating what he classified as a "reasonable doubt" regarding the transparency of the proceedings conducted so far.
In the legislative sphere, the opposition pressed for protective measures. During a session in the Chamber of Deputies, lawmaker Guillermo Rodríguez (Yo Creo party) demanded that the national government guarantee González's physical safety, arguing that the former governor, affiliated with the Colorado Party (ANR), could implicate current government authorities in his statements. Rodríguez categorically rejected the hypothesis of a domestic accident in prison, suggesting the possibility of a conspiracy.
Former mayor of Ciudad del Este, Miguel Prieto, also an ally of the Yo Creo party, publicly criticized the credibility of the Public Prosecutor's Office. On social media, Prieto reiterated the version of assault reported by the family and accused the prosecution of lacking seriousness by maintaining the theory of a fall. Consulted sources indicate that the narrative of physical violence has not yet been independently confirmed by forensic or judicial authorities, remaining an allegation by the defense and political allies against the official investigative line.
