The National Traffic and Road Safety Agency (ANTSV) will implement a point system for driver's licenses in Paraguay starting January 2027. The mechanism, known as "Scoring", aims to penalize reckless drivers and suspend from public roads those who maintain risky behaviors.
According to the National Traffic Law, each license will have an initial score of 225 points, which will be deducted as the holder commits serious or very serious infractions. The measure does not have revenue collection purposes, but rather constant evaluation of the driver, as explained by lawyer Susana Medina, director of Driving Licenses at ANTSV, in an interview with the program "Cuenta Final Radio" on station Universo 970 AM/Nación Media.
Among the most recurring infractions identified by the Road Safety Observatory are speeding, disobeying red lights, and driving under the influence of alcohol. Medina warned that drivers who commit serious offenses will have their points reduced, which could result in temporary suspension of the license or even permanent revocation of the document. "An irresponsible, reckless driver or one who ignores traffic rules could be stripped of their license for up to 5 years," she stated.
The official confirmed that ANTSV has already issued the corresponding resolution to support the reform, after participating in a working group on the modification of the penal law in the Senate. With legal approval secured, the institution will focus the coming months on socializing the regulation with the population before effective implementation throughout the national territory.
