Paraguayan digital creator Sara Benítez recounted on TikTok an argument with a United States citizen at a café in Asunción. The incident occurred after she photographed the venue and prompted social-media comments criticizing the foreigner’s approach and supporting the young woman.

Benítez said she was taking pictures of the place because she liked the café when the man, who was working remotely at the establishment, asked in English: “Why are you taking pictures?” According to her account, he approached her while shouting and in a tone she considered arrogant.

The creator said she apologized immediately. She then went over to the table to show him her phone gallery and prove that she had not photographed him. “And the guy just says to me, ‘Okay,’” she recounted. She also said she left feeling bad and wanting to cry because she had been unable to respond as she would have liked at the time.

The incident was presented as Benítez’s personal account. Reactions published on social media criticized the way the foreigner allegedly approached her and questioned why she had to explain the photographs.

The comments also revived debates about interactions between Paraguayans and some foreign residents or tourists in public spaces, particularly when visitors try to impose privacy rules during their stay in the country.
