Opposition candidate for mayor of Asunción Soledad Núñez presented five government strategies for the Paraguayan capital. She said that, if elected on October 4, the plan would be built around a “corruption-free city hall” and would seek to prepare the city for its 500th anniversary.
The measures were organized under the concept “A productive Asunción” and include actions to make the city cleaner, more orderly and more functional. Núñez said she intends to work with residents to recover squares, streets, and recreational and cultural spaces, as well as reduce the accumulation of garbage on public roads.
Specific areas of the program include urban planning, coastal-zone management, professionalizing municipal employees, organizing city hall finances, and recovering assets belonging to the municipality.
During the event, Núñez also criticized the municipal administration and the opposing political group. According to Núñez, October’s election would represent a choice between maintaining the path that brought Asunción to its current situation or “rewriting the city’s history.” The candidate also said her opponent, Camilo Pérez, could not defend a corruption-free city hall because, in her allegation, he belongs to the same group responsible for the neglect and parallel financial structures she denounced.
Pérez is the candidate of the Colorado Party (National Republican Association, ANR), from the Honor Colorado faction led by former President Horacio Cartes. The claims about neglect and parallel financial structures are Núñez’s campaign allegations, and the text released did not include a detailed response from Pérez to them.
Control of city hall determines the management of urban services, municipal finances, public spaces and planning in the capital. The launch brought together senators, members of the Chamber of Deputies and candidates for the Asunción Municipal Council. The mayoral election is scheduled for October 4, and the program places the administrative and financial reorganization of city hall at the center of the contest for control of the capital.
