The Quyquyhó Municipal Council held an extraordinary session at the residence of its president, Carlos Aurelio Bareiro Bogarín, who is under house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor. The reason for the atypical meeting was to analyze the resignation of the municipal mayor, Patricia Corvalán, who is also under the same precautionary measure.
Patricia Corvalán, the wife of Deputy Esteban Samaniego, resigned from her position to run for a council seat in the upcoming internal municipal elections, scheduled for October 4th. The decision to hold the session at the Council president's home was justified by a resolution citing the "material impediment" preventing Bareiro from moving to the official chamber, aiming to ensure the continuity of legislative work.
Both the former mayor and the Council president are under investigation by the judiciary for the alleged embezzlement of public funds from the Quyquyhó Municipality, a case that also involves Deputy Samaniego and his mother, Blanca Gloria Álvarez. The alleged damage to the public treasury, being investigated for the period between 2011 and 2017, is estimated at over G. 1.1 billion. The house arrest measure was ordered by Judge Osmar Legal due to a pattern of delaying tactics that postponed the preliminary hearing eight times.
